The Sony FX6 has become one of the most widely used cameras for documentary cinematography, thanks to its compact size, exceptional low-light performance and reliable autofocus system.

For many of my documentary projects, the FX6 offers the perfect balance between mobility and cinematic image quality. It allows me to work quickly in unpredictable environments while still maintaining professional visual standards required for broadcast and commercial productions.

My Sony FX6 Documentary Setup

In documentary filmmaking, flexibility is essential. Unlike controlled film sets, documentary environments are often unpredictable. Because of this, I keep my Sony FX6 setup relatively lightweight while still maintaining professional audio and monitoring capabilities.

My typical configuration includes a compact rig, a high-quality monitor, reliable wireless audio and cinema lenses depending on the scene and shooting conditions.

Lenses I Use

Lens selection is one of the most important aspects of documentary cinematography. Wide lenses are often useful for environmental storytelling, while longer focal lengths allow for observational shooting without disturbing the scene.

For wider perspectives I often use a Sigma 14mm lens, while zoom lenses provide flexibility when working in fast-moving situations.
